Illinois BASSET Alcohol Online Training Course Renewal
Is It Time to Renew Your BASSET Card?
Illinois' Public Act 098-0939 requires alcohol sellers and servers to complete BASSET renewal training every three years from the initial certification date to continue providing beer, wine and spirit services.
If your license is about to expire, now is the time to act. No refresher courses are needed. Simply retake a state-approved BASSET course to renew your certification.
The renewal deadline is three years from when your original certificate was issued. The state recommends taking the renewal course at least one month before your current BASSET card expires to prevent any delays or issues with employment. We make it easy to renew your credentials so you can stay compliant with Illinois regulations and continue working at your establishment without a hitch.
How to Renew BASSET Certification and Requirements for Renewal
To meet recertification guidelines, all you need to do is enroll in an Illinois BASSET training program again with a licensed provider before your certification expiration date. There is no separate renewal fee.

Who Needs to Take the Renewal Course?
Anyone who sells alcohol for on-premises consumption must renew their BASSET license before it expires. This includes bartenders, barbacks, restaurant servers, staff and security personnel who check identification, business owners and managers.
If you sell alcohol for off-site consumption, it's recommended to earn a BASSET card and renew it every three years. Examples of off-premises positions include liquor retailers and clerks at convenience stores, grocery stores and gas stations. Illinois encourages all sellers and servers to get certified, and certain employers will require it for liability purposes.
Maintaining an active BASSET permit proves you're trained in responsible beverage service and understand how to apply alcohol safety best practices and techniques to avoid drink-related incidents. It also helps you stand out when applying for jobs in the food and beverage industry.
What You'll Learn
Our BASSET course is approved by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission (ILCC). It offers all the necessary information and tools beverage workers need to provide safe and responsible drink service.
The user-friendly course covers alcohol safety topics, policies and procedures related to both on-premises and off-premises liquor sales. These include:
- National and local liquor laws
- Alcohol's effects on the body
- Common signs of intoxication
- Proper ID verification
- Avoiding alcohol sales to minors
- Refusing service and preventing overconsumption
- De-escalating situations with inebriated patrons
- Dram shop laws
- Seller and server responsibilities
- Violations, penalties and establishment liabilities
Passing the Course and Obtaining Your Renewed Certificate
To earn your official renewal certificate, you must pass a final exam administered at the end of the course with a minimum score of 70%. You'll have unlimited attempts to pass the test, so you can return to the lessons and review the content as needed.
Upon passing the final exam, you can instantly download a temporary course completion certificate. Your new BASSET card will be available to print from the MyTax Illinois website within 30 days.
Like the original, your updated alcohol certification is valid for three years from the date of issuance. If you want to keep selling or serving drinks in Illinois, you will need to undergo the same certification renewal process prior to each card's expiry date to remain in compliance.
